DIY Steps To Follow:

Site Preparation

Things to do before the sod arrives.

Sod Installation

Install the sod right upon delivery.

Watering

Watering is crucial for success.

Before the sod arrives, make sure to prepare the site by following these steps (we strongly advise that you call your local utility company to ensure that all underground utilities are marked before the start of work to avoid damage and any setbacks):

  1. 1. Remove any weeds and debris.
  2. 2. Create a rough grade and eliminate low spots.
  3. 3. Apply 3-4 cubic yards of compost per 1,000 sq ft (not topsoil) to bare ground, tilling it 4-6 inches into the soil to create good topsoil.
  4. 4. Level and smooth the installation site.
  5. 5. Grade areas along sidewalks and driveways to be about 3/4 inches below the top of the concrete.
  6. 6. Ensure you have water hoses and sprinklers ready for initial watering.
  7. 7. Check that the sprinkler system is functioning correctly.
  8. 8. Familiarize yourself with the operation of your sprinkler clock for proper watering of the new sod and established lawn.

Install the sod immediately after delivery, preferably on dry ground. Follow these steps:

  1. 1. Arrange the sod rolls to minimize traffic on the prepared soil and newly installed grass.
  2. 2. Lay the sod in a horizontal brick pattern.
  3. 3. Ensure there is no overlapping when butting the ends and sides of sod strips.
  4. 4. Fit the sod around obstacles or smaller areas by cutting the dirt side with a utility knife.

Proper watering is crucial for success. Start watering as soon as sod is laid.

  1. 1. This initial watering is the most critical. Watering should be within the first 30 minutes of installation.
  2. 2. For weeks 1 & 2 in spring/fall – Water 2-3 times per day, depending on temperature. Summer months will require 3-4 times per day depending on temperature. It is recommended to water a minimum of 20 minutes per time of day, per zone.
  3. 3. For weeks 3-4 – Reduce watering to 1-2 per day in spring and fall, and 2-3 times per day in summer months depending on temperatures. Maintain a minimum of 20 minutes per day per zone. During these weeks, it is most effective to water early in the morning and late in the evening.
  4. 4. After week 4, cut water off for a minimum of 48 hours allowing soft moist soil to dry for the first mowing. Mow on the highest level of mower and lower each additional mowing thereafter, a little at a time until you get to desired height. Transition to a normal watering routine. Sod edges, ends and along borders will be the first areas to dry if water is needed. Since demand for water is higher in these spots, it may be easier to water them directly with hose until sod is established.
